TikTok Offers Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Content in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains more than 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often illogical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 mn videos are added to the service every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the level of artificial media they watch by opening the topic control option in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting cover politics, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require users to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will henceforth apply an “AI-made” tag to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is designed to help prevent users from trying to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is additionally introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and groups to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will assist non-profit groups specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. It is planning to cut 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it is viewed by people. The platform announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
