Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
