Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
